How to Land Your Dream Collaboration as a Beginning Social Media Influencer

If you’re an aspiring social media influencer, or new to the game, you’re most likely not new to the idea of collaborating with brands to grow your following.  Once you’ve established your space on social (check out our Beginners Guide to Fashion Blogging post), the next step is figuring out how to maintain interest and provide value to continually grow and expand your reach.  One of the easiest ways to do this is by collaborating with like minded brands.

collaboration

The most important thing to keep in mind when deciding upon a collaboration is who you’re choosing to align yourself with.  You’ve poured your heart and soul into building a brand on social media that is unique to you, and the quickest way to deteriorate that is by partnering up with brands that don’t coincide with your voice.  Your followers will notice if your page is overloaded with sponsored posts that don’t reflect your personal style, so always stay true to yourself and don’t be afraid to turn down offers!

After reaching out and introducing yourself to local stores or online business’, have a plan of action and be ready to pitch yourself if they respond with interest.  Be confident in your conversation and have proven data to support why they should collaborate with you.  It’s easy for people to quickly judge your worth based on Instagram followers, so as a beginner, don’t be discouraged if that number isn’t quite as high as you’d like (yet).  Take the emphasis off of number of followers by explaining the significance of your engagement rate.  For instance, if someone has 2k followers and receives an average of 200 likes/photo, that’s not nearly as impactful as someone with 1k followers receiving an average of 400 likes/photo.  It’s also important to highlight any and all of your other strengths, like how quickly it’s grown in the last week or month, or the fact that you utilize professional photography.  Understanding your strengths will make selling yourself easy while enticing brands to team up with you.

Once you’ve gained experience and have a few collaborations under your belt, not only will your numbers increase, but you’ll have this experience to build on and showcase when pitching yourself to other brands.  Gradually begin reaching out to slightly bigger brands, and this will increase your credibility and likelihood for future collaborations with even bigger brands.  Before you know it, you’ll land that collaboration of your dreams!
