Instagram Stories Vs. Snapchat

The Imagine Media team is just as intrigued with this new Instagram ‘Stories’ feature as you are! We’ve been experimenting with it with some of our brands and our own account for a little over a week now and the jury is out. In honor of the Olympics, we are ranking the new feature on a scale of 1-10 and awarding it with a medal. Which medal? Read more to find out!

Corinne - “Honestly, I feel pretty neutral about Instagram stories, but I am excited to see the different ways in which people use their Instagram and Snapchat stories. I’d give it a 5 out of 10 because it’s pretty unoriginal, but will not detract from Instagram’s app.”

Emily - "It's a moment I'll never forget when I saw that Instagram was now introducing "stories." I remember it like it was yesterday (It was) ...I was looking over a Corinne and my palms were sweaty, all I kept thinking was - this changes everything! We took a cute pic and I drew "Hey Instagram" in glowing pink writing.  I looked around the office and everyone was acting so normal and fine and it made me that much more excited! I had the very first story out of all the friends I follow - I was hoping to become Instagram famous because of it - but unfortunately I woke up this morning with the same amount of followers. Safe to say I rate it 10 out of 10."

Shantel - "I LOVE Instagram stories! I love having both functions in the same spot, and for the old folks' like me who never really adapted Snapchat it's perfect and super convenient. 10 out of 10 for sure!"

Carolyn - “I feel pretty confused. Mostly, I am sad. I love snapchat filters and how popular it’s gotten with brands and bloggers. Now what are we all going to do?! It’s going to be a weird transition period while everyone looks at each other to decide which platform we’re going to support. It’s one or the other in my book! I’ll give it a 2 out of 10 for the effort.”

Freddy - “Let's see, what can I say about instagram stories. I guess I feel neutral about it. It seem like they are trying to have more features by adding things that other social apps have. They did a similar thing when they incorporated video and it took a lot of people away from vine. So I hope the same doesn't happen to snapchat. I don't follow a lot of people on instagram and I already feel a bit overwhelmed with how many stories I can see. I will be interested to see where it goes. 7 out of 10

Kelsey - "I'm pretty conflicted about Instagram Stories. I'm a big Snapchat fan and I don't see myself ditching it just yet, but I do like the convenience of having a Snapchat-like feature right in the Instagram app." 6 out of 10

Margot - "Love the idea for brands, don't like it as much for personal use. I think overall it's a great way to reach a company's engaged target market that they have already built on social as opposed to creating a Snapchat account and starting from scratch, but it can be overwhelming for personal use. I'm excited to get a behind the scenes glance at the brands that I've been loyal to for a long time though!"

Maire - I'm going to give it a 5 out of 10 as well. While I think it's a great way to expand the Instagram platform and the way we use it, if you're like me and you follow over 1500, the way they have it organized right now at the top is very overwhelming. Perhaps their next step could be to create a separate tab? I mean if they're already mirroring SnapChat's platform, why not just copycat the format too? On the other hand, I'm very excited to tap into this for our brands. SnapChat is a difficult platform to tackle as an agency and Instagram stories will definitely help us tie in this live/personal component for our clients.

Margaret - “Honestly, I don’t really see the point. I haven’t looked at too many of them but I think it’s overwhelming to have both Snapchat and Instagram Stories. I follow too many people on Snapchat as it is, so adding this new element is just one more thing to check and it is very repetitive. I will give it a 5 out of 10!”

Overall Rating: 6.2 out of 10 Silver Medal

Which means Snapchat still reigns with the overall Gold Medal (for now)! Can’t wait to see how this new feature evolves and how Snapchat responds. To read more about the new feature and what Instagram CEO, Kevin Systrom, has to say about the Snapchat/Instagram rivalry click here
